Man Fatally Shot, Brother Is Stabbed

A man was fatally shot in the head and his brother was stabbed in the leg, apparently by the same attacker, in their back yard Thursday night, police said.

The dead man, whose name was not immediately available, died at the scene shortly after 6:30 p.m., Sgt. Joe Kahapea said. The dead man was shot twice in the head.

Details were still sketchy Thursday night, said Sgt. Dave Nick, who helped search the neighborhood in the 1000 block of North Flower Street for anyone who had seen the slaying.

Homicide detectives, however, had little to go on. Neighbors could only confirm that they heard gunshots.

But residents’ accounts about how many shots were fired differed, Nick said.

“It’s hard. We didn’t have any witnesses to the event,” Nick said. “We were canvassing the area, but no one actually saw anything.”

Nick said that police first found the body, later learned the wounded brother had fled the scene and had been looking for help. He was taken to UCI Medical center in Orange, where he was treated for the knife wound to his leg.

No weapons were found at the scene, Nick said, adding that there was no indication the killing was gang-related.

“You could speculate on just about anything,” Nick said. “Residential robbery, to a dope deal. There was not enough evidence at the scene to draw any one conclusion.”
