Ray Floyd and Chip Beck were named Tuesday by American team captain Dave Stockton to play on the U.S. Ryder Cup team that will face Europe in September at Kiawah Island, S.C. Stockton said he gave no consideration to PGA champion John Daly because he “doesn’t have the experience.”

Beck, Stockton said, was the first of his two choices. Then he selected Floyd over Tom Kite and Tom Watson. He also considered Davis Love III, Jack Nicklaus and Curtis Strange, among others.

“The hardest call I had to make was to Tom Kite to tell him he didn’t make it,” Stockton said. “He was devastated.”

The other 10 members of the American team are U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart, Fred Couples, Hale Irwin, Lanny Wadkins, Paul Azinger, Wayne Levi, Mark O’Meara, Mark Calcavecchia, Corey Pavin and Steve Pate.
