SPORTSCOPE : Boxing Tournament Begins on Aug. 29

Many of the top amateur boxers in the United States are expected to participate in the Southern California Police Athletic League’s sixth annual Blue & Gold National Invitational Amateur Boxing Tournament Aug. 29-Sept. 1 at the Baldwin Park Community Center.

Preliminary rounds will start at 7 p.m. Aug. 29-31, and the finals will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 1. There will be three divisions: Junior Olympic Intermediate for ages 12 and 13, Junior Olympic Senior for ages 14 and 15 and Open for ages 16 to 37.

More than 100 boxers are expected to participate.

Competitors from clubs in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada, and a U.S. Marine Corps squad from Camp Lejeune, N.C., are among those expected to compete.

Quarterback Matt Koffler of Rosemead High and running back Scott Fields of Bishop Amat were honorable-mention selections to the 1991 Street & Smith High School All-America Football Team.

Koffler, who made The Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley second team and was one of the leading passers in the CIF Southern Section as a junior, completed 134 of 238 passes for 2,243 yards and 22 touchdowns last season.

Fields, an All-San Gabriel Valley first-team selection at running back last season, rushed for 1,416 yards and 15 touchdowns in 176 carries as a junior. Selected as a utility player, Fields also caught six passes for 66 yards and a touchdown and recovered a fumble for a touchdown on defense.

The CIF Southern Section has announced its schedule for the 1991 prep football season that starts Sept. 12.

Practice will begin with a three-day conditioning period Aug. 26-28, and full-contact drills start Aug. 29. The final regular-season games are Nov. 16 and the playoffs start Nov. 22.
