SPORTS BRIEFS : Pacific Rim Finals Will Be at Blair Field

Blair Field in Long Beach will be the site Sept. 2 for the finals of a series of double-headers pitting a select team of American high school baseball players against youths from Korea and Japan. Previously, it was announced that the last day of the Pacific Rim Goodwill Series VII was to have been played at the Riverside Sports Complex.

The series opens Aug. 31 at Cerritos College in Norwalk with games between Korea and Japan 2(12:30 p.m.) and Korea and the United States (3:30). The U.S. team will play Japan in Riverside on Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m. and Korea at 6:30. The Sept. 2 games at Blair Field will pit Japan against the United States at 12:30 p.m., followed by Japan and Korea at 3:30.

Player selections for the American team will be announced Tuesday and the team will practice Aug. 26 to 30 at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester. An American intrasquad game between Korea and an all-star team of high school players living in the 213 area code will be played at 10 a.m. and a practice game is scheduled at 2 p.m. Aug. 29 at Cerritos College.

Local youth baseball teams split in championship bids earlier this week.

The Southern California Cardinals, made up of players from the Southeast area, defeated Baltimore, 4-1, to capture the title in the Mickey Mantle World Series of youth baseball in Waterbury, Conn. It was the third consecutive championship for the local team, which went 5-0. The Cardinals begin play Thursday in the Super Series of Baseball in Columbus, Ga.

Los Altos of Long Beach was defeated by Tustin, 4-2, in the American Girls Division title game at the Bobby Sox national softball tournament at Cerritos Regional Park.

The Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center will play host to the 1992 World Bodybuilding Federation Championship, it was announced recently. The event will be held June 13 and 14 in conjunction with a personal fitness exposition.

A golf tournament to raise money for the Omega Psi Phi Scholarship Fund will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Aug. 30 at the Montebello Municipal Golf Course. Green fees are $65 and entries must be in by Aug. 27. Information: (213) 293-0770.
