NFL : Moon Leads Houston Past Dallas

Warren Moon ignited the Houston Oilers with touchdown passes of 47 yards to Haywood Jeffires and 21 yards to Drew Hill, and Ian Howfield kicked three field goals in a 30-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night in an NFL exhibition game.

Houston (1-2) used big plays to take a 20-6 halftime lead.

Howfield, signed last week, contributed to Houston’s halftime margin with field goals of 32 yards in the first quarter and 52 yards in the second. He added a 17-yard field goal with 2:12 left in the game.

Rookie Marcus Robertson scooped up a Cowboy punt that was blocked by safety Bubba McDowell and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. Moon found Jeffires behind the Dallas defense for a 47-yard touchdown.

The Cowboys (1-2) got field goals of 38 and 30 yards in the first half by Ken Willis, then rallied in the second half behind quarterback Troy Aikman.

Novacek caught five passes for 59 yards, including a 27-yarder to the Oiler one, in a 74-yard drive to set up Aikman’s two-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Agee on the first series of the third quarter.

Aikman ran five yards for a score in the final quarter.

Altogether, Novacek caught eight passes for 83 yards.

Moon completed 17 of 28 passes for 218 yards, while Aikman hit 26 of 41 for 269 yards.
