City Authorizes Firefighter Contract

The months-old salary dispute between El Segundo and its Firefighters Assn. ended Tuesday night when the City Council authorized a unilateral one-year contract with the firefighters.

The imposed agreement authorizes the Fire Department to hire three new employees but denies a salary increase to association members this year.

A three-year contract, which would have given the members 2% pay raises in the second and third year, was rejected by the firefighters, city officials said.

El Segundo City Manager Ronald E. Cano called the one-year contract “fair and equitable, in light of the current sensitive economic situation in the city.”
