Suit Filed in Death of Child Hit by Sweeper

The parents of a toddler killed when he was pulled beneath a Los Angeles street sweeper June 25 have filed a lawsuit against the city seeking an unspecified sum of money for burial costs and other damages. The suit was filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Guadalupe Vizcarra and Enrique Renteria, the mother and father of Arturo Renteria, who would have turned 2 in July.

The child was struck by the nine-ton vehicle while holding his mother’s hand and crossing a street at the intersection of Saticoy Street and Vineland Avenue in Sun Valley. The driver of the sweeper and the pedestrians both had a green light and the child was struck as the machine turned a corner, investigators said.

No charges have been filed against sweeper driver Troy Dolliole. The district attorney’s office has declined to pursue felony charges against Dolliole, and the case is now being reviewed by the city attorney’s office for possible misdemeanor charges, authorities said.

Prior to filing the lawsuit, the couple’s damage claim was rejected by the city.
