OUTLOOK The Monarchs will go as far as their defense and Blanton’s arm can take them. They have a strong group of linebackers in Thies, Knuff, and Gregg. Thies is a two-year starter who led the team in tackles last season. Knuff, a converted quarterback, has developed into a solid outside linebacker. Rollinson is high on Gregg, who was promoted from the sophomore team. The defensive line will be anchored by Sualua, a cousin of former Monarch and USC standout Kennedy Pola. Blanton completed 166 of 277 passes for 2,262 yards and 23 touchdowns in 1990. He threw for 920 yards in the final three games, leading the Monarchs to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division I playoffs.
