Share

La Mirada has received an award from the state Department of Conservation for its drop-off recycling program, which has recycled more than 172,993 pounds of materials since it began five months ago.

The interim program offers residents 11 locations to recycle newspapers, mixed office paper, aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, and all types of plastic beverage, food and detergent containers. Residents are encouraged to remove all lids and rinse food, beverage and detergent containers before placing them in the designated bins.

Drop-off bins are at the Kling Community Center, Behringer Park, Windermere Park, La Mirada High School and Dulles, Eastwood, Escalona, Foster Road, Gardenhill, Hutchinson and La Pluma elementary schools.

City officials currently are working on a more comprehensive recycling program to implement within the next year to meet state-mandated recycling goals, which include conserving resources and reducing the amount of waste going to landfills.

To receive cash redemption value for recyclables, residents may take their items to the Daybreak Recycling Center, 12235 Los Nietos Road, between Norwalk Boulevard and Santa Fe Springs Road in Santa Fe Springs. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

La Mirada Recycles is a cooperative project of the city, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District and Consolidated Disposal’s Daybreak Recycling Center.
