OUTLOOK

Troy was the preseason favorite to win the league last year but managed only one league victory. “On paper, it was one of our best teams since I’ve been here, but for some reason, we didn’t play well together,” Turek said. “It was a very disappointing year.” Part of the disappointment stemmed from a tough schedule. Troy played three teams--Rancho Alamitos, Valencia and Sunny Hills--that reached the Division VI semifinals and another team, Eisenhower, that was ranked No. 1 in the state most of the season. Eisenhower has been replaced by Century, a third-year school with its first senior class. Turek credits an intensified off-season weight program that “makes us a stronger, more physical team.” The team’s weakness is inexperience and the big question mark is at quarterback, where Brent Lacher, a good runner, is battling Bryan Burchit, a good passer, for the starting spot. “We’re looking for the player who gives the team the best leadership,” Turek said.
