Golf Classic Was a ‘Worthy’ Event

National Neurofibromatosis Foundation Inc. raised more than $20,000 at its first Celebrity Golf Classic July 29. The classic, hosted by the Los Angeles Lakers’ James Worthy at the Riviera Country Club, included John Glover, Tom Bosley, Ron Perlman and others. Proceeds will be used for research and public education.

* South Bay Center for Counseling has received $10,000 from the McDonnell Douglas Employees Community Fund. The money will be used for the center’s diagnostic and treatment program for child abuse.

* Valley Presbyterian Hospital’s Celebrity Golf Classic, held July 22 at MountainGate Country Club, netted $25,000 for the hospital’s cancer program. Major sponsors were the Daily News, ARCO and Union Bank. Jim Bess and Norman Whitman were event co-chairs.

* Alzheimer’s Assn. received a $15,000 grant from the Ahmanson Foundation on July 29. The funds will be used to publish and circulate a directory of community services needed by families of Alzheimer’s patients. The directory will include locations of day-care centers, lists of support groups and other information. It will be available in January.

* USC’s Kenneth Norris Jr. Comprehensive Cancer Center has received a $100,000 gift from Samuel and Rachel Kobert for research in its Gastrointestinal Tumor Service.

* American Cancer Society received $5,000, net proceeds from the First Annual Pasadena Jazz Weekend held Aug. 24 and 25. Lexus presented the event with cooperation from the Ambassador Foundation.

* Arthritis Foundation, San Fernando Valley Branch, received more than $45,000 raised at the KIIS Classic Golf Tournament held July 22 at the Lakeside Golf Club. Proceeds will be used to help Valley residents afflicted with arthritis.

* Five Acres, the Boys’ and Girls’ Aid Society of Los Angeles, received a $250,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation on June 28 to be applied to the costs of a new therapeutic school, the W. M. Keck Foundation Education Center, scheduled to open Monday. The new facility will expand residential programs at the 103-year-old school in Altadena.

* Blind Children’s Center of Los Angeles, DARE of Beverly Hills, California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation, Beverly Hills CPR Committee and the Beverly Hills Educational Foundation will share more than $70,000 raised at the annual Beverly Hills Charity Car Show. More than 500 spectators attended the July 28 event at Beverly Hills High School. The fund-raiser was sponsored by Cadillac Motor Car Division and hosted by Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories.
