Oilers Beat Bengals on Unfriendly Turf : AFC: Houston wins, 30-7, for only second victory in last 12 games at Riverfront Stadium.
The Houston Oilers finally won on their field of broken dreams.
The Oilers scored two touchdowns a minute apart in the fourth quarter on Warren Moon’s pass and Lamar Lathan’s interception return to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 30-7 Sunday night in their least-favorite stadium.
The Oilers (2-0) had been blown out their last four games at Riverfront Stadium by a combined 186-62, and they had lost 10 of their last 11 games there, including a 41-14 playoff defeat to their AFC Central Division rivals last season.
“We finally beat Cincinnati here!” receiver Drew Hill said. “Normally we come in here and lose by double-digits.”
Oiler quarterback Warren Moon completed 22 of 37 passes for 315 yards on the field where he dislocated his thumb last season.
He drove the Oilers 90 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown that put them ahead, 20-7, connecting with Haywood Jeffires for a 22-yard touchdown pass play. Moon completed six of seven passes to account for all 90 yards in the decisive drive.
“We knew they were going to play bump-and-run,” Jeffires said. “I don’t know why teams do that--you give Warren an opportunity to exploit you, and he’s going to hurt you. It was like pitch and catch out there.”
Sixty-one seconds later, Lathon returned a deflected pass 52 yards for a touchdown that clinched the victory. Ian Howfield added a 37-yard field goal in the closing minutes.
The game ended with several on-field scuffles.
The Bengals had won their last 10 home games against AFC Central opponents and their last four home openers.
The Bengals (0-2) have scored only 21 points and given up 75 while losing their first two games for the first time since 1985, when they finished 7-9.
“For whatever reason, I can’t explain it, we’re in a funk,” said Bengal quarterback Boomer Esiason, who completed 17 of 28 passes for 216 yards.
Oiler running back Allen Pinkett rushed for 101 yards in 21 carries, including a 31-yard touchdown that put Houston ahead 13-0 early in the second half.
