Loyola Recycling Efforts Win Award

The recycling program at Loyola Marymount University has earned an award from the state for its “extraordinary efforts” to cut down on the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

The program, less than one year old, received a merit award from the California Resource Recovery Assn., which organized the competition in cooperation with the state Division of Recycling.

The competition included 200 applicants in six categories.

Between Oct. 1, 1990, and Aug. 1, 1991, Loyola recycled 27 tons of newspapers and 10.5 tons of aluminum, plastic and glass. Between May and August of this year, it recycled 15 tons of scrap metal, 8 tons of cardboard, and 7.5 tons of white paper.

The school plans to expand the program to include more classrooms and will try to buy more recycled paper and office items, said Ron Alphin, the school’s environmental and waste coordinator.
