Late Touchdowns in Both Halves Save Garden Grove

Wide receiver Brandon Hoalton caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Simon Fuentes with 50 seconds to play Thursday night to give Garden Grove a 21-14 nonleague victory over Savanna in the season opener for both schools at Glover Stadium.

Hoalton, who finished the game with five catches for 130 yards, also caught a 52-yard scoring pass with eight seconds to play in the first half to pull Garden Grove to within 14-7. The Argonauts tied the score with 6:29 to play when Jim Sebreros scored on a 1-yard run to finish a 17-play, 92-yard drive.

Savanna scored twice in the second quarter on touchdown passes by quarterback Brad Belanger. His 11-yarder to Paul Phelan made it 7-0 with 10:50 left in the half, and he followed with a 10-yarder to Jeff Ragos with 3:12 to play.

The Garden Grove defense shut down the Rebels in the second half, limiting them to just one first down and 16 net yards of offense. Argonaut defenders sacked Belanger four times, including back to back plays with 2:47 remaining to help put Garden Grove in position to drive for the winning score.
