Azusa Pacific gave up 402 yards and gained only 48 Saturday against Austin College (Tex.) at Azusa.
But Azusa Pacific still won the nonconference game, 21-19, because of a defense that turned in several scoring plays.
Strong safety Dusty Bach scored on a 54-yard fumble return and a 38-yard interception return. Mark Recktenwald also scored on a 63-yard punt return.
Redlands 27, La Verne 20--Curt Landreth scored two touchdowns as the Bulldogs (1-0) beat the Leopards (0-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. game at Redlands.
Whittier 15, Claremont 3--The Poets (1-0) scored their points in the second half to beat the Stags (0-1) at Claremont.
The Poets scored a touchdown on a 74-yard pass play from Kevin Jamero to Rob Ryan.
Cal State Hayward 27, Cal Lutheran 0--Brad Bretz passed for three touchdowns to give Hayward (1-0) the victory over the Kingsmen (0-2) at Hayward.
Colorado College 17, Pomona-Pitzer 13--Nick Mystrom kicked a field goal and scored two touchdowns for Colorado in a season opener at Pomona.
