Willie Jackson, a defensive tackle at Los Angeles Pierce College who has a severe congenital learning disability, sustained an injury to his right knee in Pierce’s 19-10 victory over East Los Angeles on Saturday night.
The injury, which initially was diagnosed as torn ligaments and could require major reconstructive surgery, jeopardizes Jackson’s status as a Pierce student. Jackson, a freshman, has the academic development of a third-grader because of his learning disability.
He enrolled at Pierce expressly to play football. If the injury forces him to miss the season, he may withdraw from school. He will be examined today by team doctors.
