PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Falcons Present a New Challenge

Share

After having their way with opponents the past two weeks, the Raiders face another challenge at Atlanta on Sunday when they meet the Falcons and their Red Gun offense.

This is a watered-down version of the run-and-shoot, and no one is going to confuse Atlanta quarterback Chris Miller with Houston’s Warren Moon, but. . . .

“They do some of that funky stuff on offense,” Coach Art Shell said of the Falcons. “They use a tight end a lot, but they use a lot of four wide receivers. I think we’ll be better prepared this time around.”

The Raider defense, which gave up 47 points in the opener to Moon’s Oilers, has givenup 13 points in two games since.

The Falcons (1-2) ended a 19-game road losing streak Sunday when they defeated the San Diego Chargers at Jack Murphy Stadium, 13-10.

Atlanta Coach Jerry Glanville, who borrowed a few pages from the Raiders’ book with his all-black wardrobe and coaching tactics, said Sunday’s matchup will be the definitive test for his young team.

“When this game is over, you can usually answer yes or no,” Glanville told Atlanta reporters. “This game tells you if you’re there or you’re not there.”
