Fullerton-Northridge Pits Former Teammates

Share

Two former high school teammates will play quarterback against each other today when Cal State Fullerton plays Cal State Northridge in a 1 p.m. nonconference game in Santa Ana Stadium.

Matador junior Marty Fisher was the starter at Damien High in La Verne in 1988, and Fullerton freshman Chad May served as Fisher’s backup at Damien until taking over as starter in 1989.

Fisher is 1-1 in his first season as a college starter, and today’s game will mark May’s first college start. May replaces sophomore Terry Payne, who started but was ineffective in losses to Mississippi State (47-3) and Texas Tech (41-7).

Northridge Coach Bob Burt, who was Fullerton Coach Gene Murphy’s defensive coordinator from 1980-85, has a strong defensive team that has intercepted nine passes in two games, a 20-13 loss to Eastern Washington and a 12-10 victory over Eastern New Mexico.

Fullerton has a 13-game losing streak. Running back Reggie Yarbrough, who suffered an ankle injury against Mississippi State and was limited to three carries against Texas Tech, is expected to be at full strength today.
