Long Beach : Forum to Be Scheduled on Proposal to Elect by District
- Share via
The Long Beach City College Board of Trustees will schedule a community forum on a plan to change district election procedures. The plan would divide the area served by the community college into election districts, with each district electing one trustee.
Board members are currently elected at large. Critics claim that the current system discriminates against minorities. They say district elections would concentrate minority voting power and make it easier to elect minority board members. All five board members are Anglo, whereas 51% of the college’s students are members of an ethnic minority.
The college has 23,000 students and serves Long Beach, Signal Hill, Santa Catalina Island and most of Lakewood.
Board members did not specify a date for the forum.
