COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : San Diego State’s Faulk Playing It Cool

Share

San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk says he isn’t doing anything special for today’s game against UCLA. “I don’t really look at them as a team I get pumped up to play,” he said. “I play my best every time.” The opponents’ rushing record against UCLA was set last season by Jon Vaughn of Michigan, who gained 288 yards. Faulk broke an NCAA rushing record two weeks ago against Pacific when he ran for 386 yards. . . . UCLA Coach Terry Donahue is concerned about the size of San Diego State’s offensive line. Aztec guard Carlson Leomiti weighs 340 pounds and three other players are in the 290- to 295-pound range.

A crowd of 35,000 is expected to watch the game today at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Last season, the Aztecs averaged 22,059 for their home games.

San Diego State has lost only two games since being beaten by UCLA, 45-31, last Oct. 13 at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins gained a season-high 376 yards rushing against the Aztecs. UCLA is an 8 1/2-point favorite.

“I expect them to come in here and try to hammer us with the run, dominate us, hurt us and score a lot of points,” San Diego State Coach Al Luginbill said. “That would put them back in the national scene again.”

UCLA quarterback Tommy Maddox, on San Diego State: “I think it helps us that the game is on national TV, and when you play on national TV, you don’t want to get embarrassed. They have some good athletes and recruited very well. They’re going to be high as a kite. Last year, they were one of the hardest-hitting teams we played.”
