Garey’s Rice Gains 199 Yards; Fullerton Falls, 16-15
FULLERTON — Sevens ran wild Thursday night as Fullerton High’s David Chacon and Garey’s Anthony Rice, both of whom wear No. 7, took turns carrying the ball in their hands and the game’s outcome on their shoulders.
In the end it was Rice and Garey who came away with a 16-15 victory at Fullerton District Stadium. All Rice contributed toward that was 199 yards in 19 carries and 14 of Garey’s 16 points.
With Fullerton leading, 8-0, in the first quarter, having scored on a one-yard David Chacon run and successfully gone for two on a pass from Daniel Chacon to Brian Wilber, Rice broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run. Daytron Morgan hit Kareem Wade for a two-point conversion and an 8-8 tie.
It remained that way until midway through the third quarter when David Chacon went 31 yards for his second touchdown. Chacon rushed 20 times for 148 yards and accounted for 13 of Fullerton’s points. His conversion kick gave Fullerton a 15-8 lead.
Rice went for a 35-yard touchdown run on Garey’s next series. Electing to go for two, Garey gave the ball to Rice. He swept right, met three tacklers and dragged them into the end zone for what proved to be the winning score.
