The King of Marvin Gardens (Showtime Wednesday at 3:45 a.m.) Bob Rafelson’s memorable, ambitious 1972 mood piece, with Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern cast as very different brothers, one striving to prevent the other from destroying himself. Set in a seedy, highly symbolic, pre-legalized gambling Atlantic City, remarkably photographed by Laszlo Kovacs. With Ellen Burstyn.
Mary, My Dearest and The Realm of Fortune (KCET Saturday at 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., respectively) Remarkable, allegorical south-of-the-border double feature. The first is Jaime Humberto Hermosillo’s splendid film of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s masterpiece of romance, irony and tension. The second is Arturo Ripstein’s social melodrama.
