Corona Chick Wins Ed Burke at Los Alamitos
Corona Chick ran the fastest 350 yards of the year Saturday night, winning the $295,000 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity by 1 3/4 lengths at Los Alamitos.
The filly, owned by Robert Etchandy of Anaheim Hills and trained by Frank Monteleone, led wire-to-wire of the 350-yard race completed in 17.32 seconds, .03 faster than the 17.35 recorded by I Will Sign It in the Rainbow Futurity Consolation at Ruidoso Downs, N.M. on July 13.
Corona Chick was sent off as the 3-5 favorite and paid $3.20 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.40 to show. Ed Grimley paid $3.00 and $3.20, while third-place finisher Holland Ease paid $4.40.
Corona Chick was ridden by Kip Didericksen--his 15th stakes victory of the year.
Corona Chick has won 6 of 8 starts and has earnings of $222,357. Etchandy said he will pay a supplemental entry fee to make Corona Chick eligible for the Oct. 16 Kindergarten Futurity Trials.
