An inmate serving a one-year sentence for grand theft escaped early Tuesday from a minimum security area at the Biscailuz Center in East Los Angeles, sheriff’s deputies said.

Norman Elliot, 27, a trustee at the jail in the City Terrace area, was last seen about 12:30 a.m. in his dormitory, Deputy Larry Mead said. Elliot was discovered missing about two hours later during a bed check.

He was arrested Aug. 14 in Long Beach, where he lived, for grand theft and was sentenced Sept. 3. Mead said that Elliot, who worked in the kitchen area at the jail, was apparently upset over family problems. He was last seen wearing a lime green Los Angeles County Jail jumpsuit.
