TOP PERFORMERS

Rancho Alamitos’ Jeff Byrd gained 283 yards in 45 carries, scoring on runs of three, 12, 14 and three yards to lead the Vaqueros to a 38-24 Garden Grove League victory over Pacifica.

Alfred Romo accounted for nine of El Modena’s 10 points in a 10-0 victory over Newport Harbor. Romo kicked a 41-yard field goal, caught an eight-yard touchdown pass and intercepted two passes.

Sean Bickel scored on a seven-yard pass, then returned the second half opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to spark Brea-Olinda to a 14-10 victory over Costa Mesa.

Scott Seal scored for 151 yards and a touchdown in 22 caries as Irvine defeated Woodbridge, 24-7.

Kevin Pola ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns in 32 carries for Santa Ana, which dropped a Sunset League game to Westminster, 26-24.

LATE HEROICS

Jake Beeney, a Los Alamitos defensive back, stopped St. John Bosco quarterback Jason Hamilton at the one-yard-line on a two-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter to preserve the unbeaten Griffins’ 14-12 victory.

ON DEFENSE

Mission Viejo linebacker Mark Howerton was worried that Laguna Hills would score on the Hawks’ first drive of the game. But the next thing Howerton knew, he was scoring, returning a fumble by Hawk quarterback Mike Maceranka 87 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter of Mission Viejo’s 35-0 victory. Howerton also blocked a punt and recovered it for Mission Viejo’s final touchdown.

El Dorado’s Dan Molnar intercepted three passes, returning one of them 27 yards for a touchdown, to spark the Golden Hawks to a 17-13 victory over Fullerton.

NOTEWORTHY

Laguna Hills quarterback Mike Maceranka left early in the second quarter of the Hawks’ 35-0 loss to Mission Viejo after injuring his collarbone while being tackled. The team’s trainer said Maceranka, who broke his collarbone last summer, will be X-rayed Saturday to see if the collarbone was broke again.
