NATION IN BRIEF : OREGON : Forest Fire Imperils Famed Lodge at Falls

A forest fire grew to 1,000 acres in the Columbia River Gorge and threatened Oregon’s historic Multnomah Falls Lodge just west of Portland. Embers fell on the 66-year-old lodge, and flames swept to the top of the gorge above the 620-foot-high Multnomah Falls. The fire jumped a ditch near the famed wood and stone lodge creating a “crisis situation,” a U.S. Forest Service official said.
