Newport Harbor’s offense hadn’t scored in more than two games, but thanks to wide receiver Branon Coluccio, the Sailors finally reached the end zone. LATE HEROICS

Corey Fleming caught a seven-yard pass from Lenny Gavin with 91 seconds remaining to lift Orange Lutheran to a 16-10 victory over Los Angeles Baptist.

STREAKS

Corona del Mar defeated Costa Mesa for the 12th year in a row, knocking off the Mustangs, 17-14. Running back Tom Hess accounted for all his team’s points with touchdown runs of one and two yards, two extra-point kicks and a 37-yard field goal.

ON DEFENSE

George Sagen’s second interception of the game, with just over four minutes to play, helped ensure unbeaten Los Alamitos’ fifth victory, a 20-13 decision over Lakewood.

NOTEWORTHY

Raoul Morris, a junior running back, twisted his ankle on the kickoff return opening the second half of Los Alamitos’ 20-13 victory over Lakewood. Coach John Barnes said Morris, who was on crutches at game’s end, could be out for more than a week. Morris had 33 yards rushing in five carries before the injury.

ON THE RECORD

‘I look at Gary’s team last year and I look at his football team this year: It is a better team now and last year they went on to win the CIF championship in their division. As far as I’m concerned, yeah, they’re the No. 1 team in the county.’
