Toney Knocks Out Dell’Aquila to Retain IBF Middleweight Title
James Toney easily defended his International Boxing Federation middleweight title by knocking out Francesco Dell’Aquila of Italy in the fourth round of a scheduled 12-round fight at Stade Louis II.
Toney, from Ann Arbor, Mich., improved his record to 28-0-1 with 20 knockouts. It was the second defense of the title he won by upsetting Michael Nunn.
Dell’Aquila’s record dropped to 31-2-2. His only other loss was by knockout to Patizio Kalembay. Dell’Aquila was the European middleweight champion.
Toney’s next opponent probably will be Mike McCallum, the WBA champion, in December.
