A Van Nuys man was shot and killed early Sunday during an argument at a party, Los Angeles police said.

Keith Marso, 25, was attending a party with about 100 other people in the 7400 block of Haskell Avenue about 1:30 a.m. when he began arguing with host Perry Bell, 23, Detective Steve Hooks said.

Marso was asked to leave the party, but returned with three friends about an hour later and apparently challenged Bell to fight in the front yard, Hooks said. Bell shot Marso, who was wielding a stick, once in the chest with a handgun, Hooks said.

Marso was pronounced dead at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and Bell surrendered to police. No one else was injured.

Hooks said the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office must decide whether Bell, who is being held without bail on suspicion of murder, fired in self-defense.

“It looks like it was just a fight that got out of hand,” Hooks said.
