Heater Pipe Causes Fire, $80,000 in Damage

A dislocated pipe from a wall heater set fire to a Burbank home Monday, causing about $80,000 in damage, fire officials said.

Three or four occupants of the two-story house converted to separate apartments were forced to flee the fire in the 400 block of Verdugo Drive, but no one was injured, Burbank Fire Capt. Richard Fischer.

Fischer said the fire broke out shortly before 8:30 a.m. when hot exhaust fumes emitted by a dislocated wall-heater pipe on the first floor ignited wood studs beside the heater. Flames crept up the walls to the second floor and the roof, he said.

Three dozen firefighters brought the blaze under control in about an hour, Fischer said. Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the contents and $60,000 to the structure.
