WSC Honors Glendale’s Thorossian, Pierce’s West

Glendale College fullback Rafik Thorossian has been selected as the Western State Conference offensive player of the week, and Pierce defensive lineman Randy West has been named as co-defensive player of the week.

Thorossian, a sophomore from Glendale High, gained 204 yards in 17 carries and scored three touchdowns in leading the Vaqueros to their first victory, a 34-26 triumph over Ventura on Saturday.

West, a sophomore from Cleveland High, had 10 tackles--including two sacks--in Pierce’s 7-7 tie with L. A. Southwest.

The Happy Hairston Foundation will serve as host for the fourth Celebrity Invitational golf tournament Monday at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. Celebrity participants include Jack Nicholson, Jerry West and John Candy.

A pair of area teams are ranked in the CIF/Reebok coaches’ girls volleyball poll. Notre Dame High is ranked 16th and Thousand Oaks is tied for 17th in the state top 20.

Notre Dame, 10-3, 4-0 in the Sunshine League, received 19 points to hold its position from the last poll. Thousand Oaks (9-5, 8-1 in the Marmonte League) received 17 points to remain tied with Poway of the San Diego Section.

Royal (9-2, 7-2 in the Marmonte League) and Ventura (8-1 overall and in Channel League play) were the other area teams to receive votes in the state poll.

Lakewood St. Joseph (10-0 overall) moved from second to take the top spot in the poll from St. Francis of the Central Coast Section with 140 points.

Jim Breen of West Hills shot a 154 and finished tied for second with Peer Hegg of Hacienda Heights in the 13th Southern California Golf Assn. Senior amateur championship at Antelope Valley Country Club in Palmdale on Tuesday. Veteran amateur golfer Bud Bradley of Santa Monica won the championship by four strokes.

Speedway motorcycle racing will return to the Ventura County Fairgrounds on Nov. 9.

The first race of the 500cc alcohol-burning, no-brake motorcycles begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are available beginning at 6:30 p.m.
