The New Area Code: 310

Share

At 2 a.m. Saturday, the new 310 area code will be introduced in Los Angeles County. In the South Bay, parts of Hawthorne and Inglewood, along with Los

Angeles International Airport, will switch from the 213 to the 310 code.

THE REASON: Telephone companies are running out of phone numbers. In addition to population growth, the companies must provide lines for new technological services such as fax machines, pagers and cellular phones.

THE COST: The cost of a call will not change. The use of an area code in making a call does not determine whether it is long distance.

THE CHANGE: From Saturday until May 2, 1992, affected customers may use either the 310 or the 213 area code. After that, callers will be connected to a recording asking them to use the correct code.

THE AREA: The 310 code includes the western,

coastal, southern and eastern portions of Los Angeles County. The new code also takes in parts of northern Orange County.

IS IT ME?: In Hawthorne, the following telephone prefixes will switch to the 310 area code: 219, 330, 331, 332, 412, 419, 644, 671-677, 679, 970, 973 and 978.

In Inglewood, these prefixes will switch to the 310 area: 215, 216, 219, 330-332, 337, 338, 348, 410, 412, 417, 419, 568, 641, 642, 644-646, 649, 670-677, 679, 970, 973 and 978.
