Byrd Leads Rancho Alamitos Past Santiago

Rancho Alamitos scored touchdowns on each of its first three possessions Thursday night to defeat Santiago, 28-0, in a Garden Grove League football game Thursday night at Garden Grove High.

Jeff Byrd, the county’s top rusher and No. 2 scorer, scored twice for the Vaqueros (7-0-1, 5-0 in league). His first touchdown came on a 25-yard run on Rancho Alamitos’ fifth play with 8 minutes 50 seconds left in the first quarter.

Byrd (136 yards in 20 carries) scored his second touchdown on a 14-yard run with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter. He now has 1,209 yards in 181 carries and 118 points.

Marshall Brown scored on a 36-yard run with 4:39 left in the first quarter and Leon Vickers (80 yards, 12 carries) scored on a seven-yard run with 9:07 left for the Vaqueros, ranked seventh in the county.

Santiago fell to 2-5, 2-2.
