The NFL won’t fine Chicago Bear safety Mark Carrier for handing a football to a paralyzed fan during last Sunday’s game against New Orleans.

Bear spokesman Bryan Harlan said the league notified the team Thursday that Carrier would not be fined $1,000 under a rule that forbids throwing balls into the stands.

“That’s absolutely correct,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday night. “He wasn’t fined. There was no intention to fine him. Obviously, it was a very nice gesture.”

Carrier recovered a fumble in the Bears’ 20-17 victory and handed the ball to Keith Patz, who was sitting on the sidelines in his wheelchair.
