Estancia Wins When Trabuco Hills’ Field Goal Try Sails Wide

Estancia’s margin for victory was narrow. Just how narrow was subject to debate.

The Eagles (5-2-1, 2-1) defeated Trabuco Hills, 20-17, Friday night when Jason Teno’s 35-yard field-goal attempt went wide right with 44 seconds to play. Estancia quarterback Matt Johner, who led his team back from a seven-point, fourth-quarter deficit, said the kick was wide by an inch.

“He barely missed it,” said Johner, who scored two touchdowns and completed 12 of 16 passes for 123 yards.

Estancia Coach John Liebengood said it clearly wasn’t between the pipes but didn’t care to elaborate.

“It was wide,” he said. “That’s all I could tell you.”

The one that counted was kicked five minutes earlier when Estancia’s Mike Smith made a 35-yarder with 5:19 left.

The loss dropped Trabuco Hills to 3-4-1, 2-1 in the league.

Trailing 17-10 early in the fourth quarter, Estancia went 89 yards for a touchdown to tie the score. The drive was kept alive by a roughing-the-kicker penalty. Johner sneaked over from the one to cap it and set up Smith’s game-winner.
