Hope’s Assists Pace Aztecs Past Cal State Northridge

Pam Hope’s 44 assists lifted San Diego State to a 15-9, 15-9, 15-11 women’s volleyball victory over visiting Cal State Northridge Friday in a nonconference match.

Gracie Schutt paced the Aztecs (13-11) with 18 kills, and Jennifer Miller added 16. CSUN fell to 12-11.

Jennifer Lofftus had 23 kills to lead University of San Diego (6-10, 6-4) to a 6-15, 15-7, 15-6, 10-15, 16-14 West Coast Conference victory over San Francisco (5-14, 1-7). Lofftus got support from Andrea Bruns, who had 16 kills, and Nikki Wallace and Amy McMahon, who had 13 apiece. The Dons fell to 5-14, 1-7.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated visiting Christ College Irvine, 15-4, 16-14, 15-11, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. Robin Rabello led PLNC (13-15, 3-8) with 19 kills.

BASEBALL

Kasey McKeon has been added to the Padres’ scouting staff, said Reggie Waller, director of scouting. McKeon, 24, the son of Jack McKeon, a former Padres general manager and manager, will be responsible for the North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia territory.

McKeon spent the 1991 season as a coach for Reno, an independent single A team. A graduate of San Diego State and Patrick Henry High, McKeon played in the Detroit Tiger organization for two years as a catcher/infielder.

MEN’S SOCCER

Juan Guarda scored in the 96th minute on a penalty kick to give St. Mary’s (8-9, 2-2) a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting University of San Diego (6-10, 1-4) in a West Coast Conference match.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Despite losing its season finale, a 2-1 match against UC Irvine, San Diego State (9-6-3) finished with its best record in the program’s three years. The Aztecs won seven games in their first two years.

Joy Angeles gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead, but Shawna Berke then scored two goals for UCI (12-6-1).

WATER POLO

UC San Diego got three goals from Greg Goodrich but fell to UCLA, 11-9, at Canyonview Pool. UCSD fell to 15-13.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Playing on a sprained left ankle, Ginger Helgeson of San Diego lost to 15-year-old Chanda Rubin, 6-3, 7-5, in a quarterfinal match of the $150,000 Arizona Tennis Classic at Scottsdale.

Helgeson was injured in a second-round victory over top-seeded Gigi Fernandez on Thursday.

Rubin fell behind 1-3 early but came back to win the next five games for the set.

The second set was 5-5, but Rubin held serve for a 6-5 lead and claimed victory when Helgeson double-faulted at match point.
