Coach Had a Victory Speech, but No Victory

Share

With his Weber State team leading the University of Nevada, 42-14, at halftime Saturday, Coach Dave Arslanian was thinking about his victory speech.

“I was going to say that these were two great football teams and we were fortunate to win,” Arslanian said.

It turned out that Weber State wasn’t so fortunate, after all.

After Weber State scored early in the third quarter to make it 49-14, Nevada scored 41 consecutive points to win, 55-49, in the greatest comeback in NCAA history.

So Arslanian had to scrap his postgame speech. All he could say was: “I didn’t think they could come back from that far down.”

Who would?

Words gone awry: A letter to the editor scolded bicycle magazine VeloNews for misquoting Chuck Bednarczyk, “If not Europe, I would be going to waste.” What Bednarczyk really said, was: “If not Europe, I would be going out west (to race in Colorado or California).”
