NBA : Robinson Leads Spurs Past Sonics

David Robinson scored 33 points, including two free throws that broke a late tie, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 106-98 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Sunday night at Seattle.

Gary Payton’s steal and layup tied the game, 95-95, with 2:29 left. But Robinson scored seven points in the final two minutes on three free throws and two thundering dunks as San Antonio pulled away.

Robinson’s go-ahead free throws came with two minutes remaining as San Antonio outscored Seattle, 11-3, down the stretch.

Derrick McKey led the Sonics with 23 points and Eddie Johnson added 21.

Willie Anderson scored 17 points for the Spurs, who won their opener, 140-99, against Dallas on Friday night.

Robinson scored 10 points in the third quarter, lifting the Spurs to a 70-59 advantage.

The Sonics, 0-2 after losing their opener at home against Phoenix, rallied behind the inside play of McKey and the outside shooting of Johnson, who scored nine and eight points, respectively, in the period.

The Spurs led, 56-51, at halftime after leading, 27-14, with 2:42 left in the first period.

Led by Nate McMillan’s five points, the Sonics closed to 29-23 after one quarter.

Seattle tied the score, 40-40, with nine consecutive points in the second quarter.
