Position: No. 1 singles

Class: Junior

Los Alamitos, the No. 1-ranked tennis team in the Southern Section Division 2-A, hasn’t lost a match this season, in large part because of the efforts of Huberman. Last season, Huberman played No. 2 singles behind senior Laura Brun and the Griffins advanced to the 2-A title game before losing to Sunny Hills. This year, Huberman has moved to No. 1 and become a more aggressive player. “Susie was strong last year and this year she has become a team leader plus somebody I can count on for wins,” Los Alamitos Coach Debbie Fleming said. “She can hit 100 balls on every point, but now she comes to the net. She orchestrates the points and now is in command of most of her matches.” Huberman finished the regular season last week by losing only two games in six sets as the Griffins (19-0-1) defeated Esperanza, 17-1, and Katella, 14-4. She has a 55-5 record and a 28-2 mark in the Empire League.

Other top performers:

Joyce Cruz, who lost only one game in six singles sets in Rosary’s tennis victories over St. Joseph and Bishop Amat.

Julie Focht, who won the South Coast League’s individual cross-country title, covering three miles in 18 minutes 22 seconds and helping El Toro to second place in the team competition.
