Disbelief Is Replaced by Love

Share

This past summer, we told our son when he attended Magic Johnson’s basketball camp to cherish and enjoy every moment while he was there because not only was he going to learn the game of basketball from probably the greatest point guard ever to play the game, but that Magic would one day in the near future be announcing his retirement from basketball. The camp was the highlight of my 13-year-old son’s life.

Now, regrettably, Magic Johnson’s retirement from basketball is here. The announcement was not one of celebration and happiness, but one filled with disbelief, sadness and tears. We shed tears for the simple loss of not being able to ever again watch him perform his magic on the NBA courts. But at the same time, we give thanks and rejoice that Earvin Johnson Jr., the man, is alive, smiling and willing to help others despite being afflicted with HIV.

Magic has shown once again that a man’s greatness should not be measured by fame and fortune, but rather in his ability to deal with adversity and personal tragedy with dignity, honor and humility. We love you, Magic. Our prayers and thoughts will be with you always. Godspeed and God Bless.
