HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Munoz Becomes County’s No. 2 All-Time Passer in Hilltop Victory

Hilltop’s Jorge Munoz moved to No. 2 on the San Diego Section’s all-time passing list by completing 17 of 21 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Lancers (7-2, 5-1 in the Metro Conference) to a 47-7 victory over Mar Vista.

Munoz has 5,414 career passing yards, which puts him ahead of Fallbrook’s Scott Barrick (5,388 in 1985-86), but well shy of the section record held by Helix’s Jim Plum (6,913 in 1979-81). Munoz also tied Holtville’s Alex Wells (1987-89) on the section’s all-time touchdown passes list at 55 with one game remaining in the regular season.

Munoz was taken out of the game after the first play of the second half, a 71-yard touchdown throw to Bobby Lugo that made it 41-0. That was all the action Lugo would see, too, as he finished with 11 catches for 291 yards.

“I look forward to catching passes from him,” Lugo said of Munoz, a senior who has not been recruited. “He deserves a lot of recognition. He’s one of the best. It’s great to play with him.”

Munoz said he hopes that moving to No. 2 will bring out college recruiters.

“It’s great to get it,” he said. “But I never expected it. Hopefully this will bring some recruiters out to our playoff games.”

Coaches say Munoz can throw the ball over 70 yards with accuracy and that he is fleet-footed for a quarterback.
