A 19-year-old Santa Ana man was in critical condition Saturday after he was shot in the head in what police called a gang-related incident.

The man, Angel Sanchez, was rushed to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was expected to undergo surgery for a bullet wound to the head.

Santa Ana Police Sgt. Jack Rife said Sanchez was sitting in his car in the 1600 block of West 2nd Street when another vehicle pulled alongside. Its occupants fired three shots into Sanchez’s car, one of which struck him on the left side of his head, Rife said. The other two shots struck the car. The men in the second car then fled the scene, he said.

Rife said suspects used a 9-millimeter handgun in the attack.
