SIGNINGS

Peter Bates, a 6-7, 220-pound forward from Torrey Pines, will sign a basketball letter of intent with SMU today, Torrey Pines Coach John Farrell said Tuesday.

Today is first day of the early signing period for high school players.

Bates did not start last season for Torrey Pines but had an excellent summer. He was rated among the top 15 players at the Superstar Camp at UC Santa Barbara this summer.

“He just wasn’t ready last year,” Farrell said. “His best days are ahead of him.”

Bates was also considering Yale and Army.

Heather Holm, a 5-11 guard from El Cajon Valley, announced she will sign with Sacramento State. Holm, who averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists last year, led El Cajon to the 2-A Section title.

FOOTBALL

As expected, a Grossmont Conference panel ruled that Mt. Miguel High must forfeit its three victories and one tie for using an ineligible player.

Mt. Miguel discovered last week that linebacker Beshear Randle is in his ninth semester of high school, one more than allowable under CIF rules. Mt. Miguel will forfeit victories over El Cajon Valley, Granite Hills and Monte Vista and a tie against Bonita Vista.
