TENNIS SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ PLAYOFFS : Simmons Improves to 44-1 in Leading Burbank to Win

Corie Simmons swept all three of her singles matches Thursday to lead Burbank High to a 12-6 victory over Glendale in a first-round match of the Southern Section 3-A Division girls’ tennis playoffs at Glendale.
Simmons, a sophomore, improved to 44-1. Burbank is 9-7.
In another 3-A match:
Arcadia 13, Hart 5--Hart’s No. 1 doubles team of Julie Wood and Leslie Trovato won its three matches but the rest of the team did not fare as well at Arcadia.
Wood and Trovato finished 46-8 overall. Arcadia (14-1) will play Westlake in the next round.
2-A DIVISION
Chaminade 18, Lakewood 0--Laura Gross, a sophomore and Chaminade’s No. 1 singles player, won each of her matches by 6-0 scores to lead the Eagles to a win at the Northridge Tennis Club.
Chaminade (16-4) advances to the second round Saturday. Lakewood finished at 10-7.
1-A DIVISION
Quartz Hill 12, El Monte 6--Philippa Gray and Dhashini Mahadevan combined to win six singles matches in leading host Quartz Hill (16-2) to victory.
SMALL SCHOOLS
Bell-Jeff 11, Desert 7--The doubles team of Leslie Soloki and Denise Cortez won its three matches to lead Bell-Jeff (7-6).
