Sixth-ranked Caifornia earned a trip to the Citrus Bowl by beating Arizona State, 25-6, Saturday.

A Citrus Bowl official said the Bears (9-1) and Atlantic Coast Conference champion Clemson (7-1-1) will be invited to play in the Jan. 1 game at Orlando, Fla.

“We’re going to have a game with only two losses in it--the ACC champ and the Pac-10 runner-up,” Citrus Bowl spokesman Chuck Bohe said.

“We’ll be delighted if Cal accepts the bid.”

Brian Treggs caught a 65-yard touchdown pass on a flea-flicker, Russell White ran for a touchdown and Doug Brien kicked four field goals as Cal, 6-1 in the Pac-10, won its fourth in a row.

“The wins took care of themselves. The bowl issue is settled,” Cal linebacker Cornell Collier said.

The Bears overcame three turnovers by holding Arizona State (5-5, 3-4) to a season-low 227 yards. Cal had eight sacks and forced four turnovers.

“We came back in, and one of the things we did was give the defense a standing ovation,” Cal Coach Bruce Snyder said. “The defense was the key to the victory. We’ve really improved our quickness, and we put so much pressure on the quarterback.”

Cal wasn’t afraid to try anything offensively, calling three reverses and a halfback pass to the quarterback in addition to the flea-flicker.

“We’re not throwing and catching as well as we have,” Snyder said. “We struggled most of the day. We had four tricks today and that gave us some spark. You try and create some emotion. .”

White ran for 125 yards in 33 carries, giving him 1,016 yards for the season. White, who gained 1,018 yards as a sophomore last year, became the first Cal running back to gain 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons.
