HUNTINGTON BEACH : Consultant to Check City Gym Condition

Share

The city will spend $15,000 to evaluate the need for renovations at the 60-year-old city gymnasium and pool.

The City Council has agreed to hire an engineering consultant to inspect the roof and walls as well as electrical, plumbing and heating systems in the building and pool.

The consultant will determine what is needed to make the downtown facility comply with state earthquake codes and how much those renovations would cost.

After receiving the report, the council will decide whether to make the improvements and if it will renew a lease agreement with the Huntington Beach City School District that expires June 2.

The city owns the building at 16th Street and Palm Avenue but leases the land beneath it from the school district. District officials have asked the city to consider extending the joint use of the facility and refurbishing it.

The city will pay for the consultant from its park acquisition and development fund.
