Toreros Easily Beat Touring Czech Squad

The University of San Diego men’s basketball team, in its only exhibition, beat the Trencin club of Czechoslovakia, 89-59, on Sunday. Centers Brooks Barnhard and Reed Watson led a balanced Torero attack with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Chris Grant added 11 points and Kelvin Woods 10. Barnhard made all five field-goal attempts as the Toreros shot 51%.

The Toreros scored the first six points of the game and built leads of 20 points in the first half. They led at halftime, 49-31, and steadily pulled away in the final 10 minutes. USD forced 24 turnovers and outrebounded the visitors, 39-24.

The Czech club has lost all five games on its West Coast tour. USD opens the season Friday against San Diego State at the Sports Arena.

In an earlier game, the USD women lost to the Latvian national women’s team, 93-75. Toreras center Chris Enger led all scorers with 24 points. Lynda Jones added 20 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
