A San Diego woman was killed when a semi-trailer truck broadsided her car as she drove to work Monday morning.
Donna Berretta, 48, was driving to her job as a secretary at Rancho Bernardo High School when the collision occurred at 7:05 a.m. at Carmel Mountain Road and Camino del Norte. She was pronounced dead at the scene, said Brenda Cummings, a county medical examiner investigator.
The truck carrying a load of hot slurry seal street coating reportedly ran a red light, Sgt. Charles Wallace said. The driver, Ruben Robles, 29, of San Diego, was not arrested. An investigation into the accident was continuing, Wallace said.
The truck also hit a second car carrying five people, Police Lt. Tom Orden said. A passenger in the second car, Dominador Estoesta, 46, of San Diego was taken to Pomerado Hospital, where he was treated for bruises and released, hospital spokeswoman Amy de Noble said.
After striking the second car, the truck tipped over and dumped its load. Traffic was delayed for about two hours as firefighters cleared the sticky road sealant, Orden said.
