Whittier : Council Supports County Bond Issue for Parklands

Share

The City Council has unanimously passed a resolution in support of placing a countywide $800-million parks and recreation bond issue on the ballot next June. If the measure makes the ballot and wins voter approval, Whittier could stand to gain $31 million to purchase parkland in the undeveloped hills north of town.

The city also would be eligible to apply for millions of dollars in grants for senior citizen facilities, gang prevention, tree planting, nature trails, river restoration and historical preservation. A similar bond issue failed to gain voter approval in November, 1990. That bond issue, Proposition B, garnered 57% of the vote but required a two-thirds majority, as would the new measure.
