HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Poway to Face San Dieguito in Finals

Three-time defending San Diego Section champion Poway gets a chance for its fourth straight after beating Palomar League rival Mt. Carmel Wednesday night in the Division I girls’ volleyball semifinals at University City High School.

Second-seeded Poway scored a 15-12, 15-5, 13-15, 15-9 over the Sundevils and will face fourth-seeded San Dieguito Saturday at Mira Mesa at 8 p.m. in the third game of a championship tripleheader. San Dieguito upset top-seeded Mira Mesa in five games.

Poway (15-2) reached the finals on the strength of Allison Brady’s 13 kills, including six in the fourth game as Poway overcame a 5-3 deficit to take a 10-5 lead with Kara Milling at the service line. Milling and Korie Rogers had nine kills apiece for Poway.

Third-seeded Mt. Carmel (9-6) held an 8-2 lead in the first game before being outscored 28-9 to fall two games behind. The Sundevils were led by Janie Liao (10 kills) and Melanie Williams (seven kills).

In other matches:

San Dieguito d. Mira Mesa--Kim Johnson had 15 kills and six aces to lead San Dieguito (20-13) to a 12-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-7, 15-13 victory. Amy Ferguson added 10 kills. Mira Mesa is 26-3.

Division II, at Escondido

Torrey Pines d. Grossmont-- No. 1 Torrey Pines (25-5) beat No. 4 Grossmont (20-11), 15-3, 15-6, 15-0, behind Kami Schmedding (nine kills) and Laura Bull (eight kills). The title game is at 5:30 p.m.

Monte Vista d. San Pasqual--Amy Boncorsi had 15 kills as No. 2 Monte Vista (37-3) beat No. 3 San Pasqual (26-4), 13-15, 15-5, 16-14, 15-8. Raimie Engelman had served six aces and 12 blocks, and Mykie Evans added 10 kills.

Division III, at Serra

USDHS d. Ramona--No. 1 USDHS (20-1) scored a 15-5, 15-12, 15-9 victory. Liz Pharis had 12 kills, and Kate Stockholm had 10 kills and eight aces. The title game is at 3 p.m.

La Jolla d. Madison--Second-seeded La Jolla (26-4) scored a 15-6, 15-1, 15-4 victory.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Nikki Willette, a senior at Serra who won the Section championship two years ago but was unable to defend her title last year because of an injury, advanced to the section semifinals with a two-set victory over Megan Coakley of USDHS. She will play Marissa Velasco of USDHS in her last hurdle before the championship match.

The other semifinal pits Vanessa Rooks of Monte Vista against Betsy Miringoff of Torrey Pines.
